Wood is one of nature’s great gifts. A sustainable natural material with a broad range of applications, it is highly desired for its natural beauty and ability to be molded and carved into any shape. This has adapted it well as a furniture and construction material.
Naturally, you want your railings, mantles, stairwells, window and door frames, and trim to look as best as they can. Staining helps with this. Depending on what look you are trying to achieve, you can use wood stains to:
- Bring out wood’s natural grain, which adds character to your wooden fixtures
- Ensure an even color tone for your railings, mantles, trim, and stairways.
CELEBRATE WOOD’S NATURAL GRAIN WITH A STAINED FINISH
Wood’s natural grain is one of its most desirable features. Because every tree is unique, thanks to its branch structure and dents and nicks that produce all its knots and other ‘imperfections’, every railings, mantles and stairway piece will be unique if the grain wasn’t finished with opaque paint or lacquer.
Particularly for architectural woodwork like doors and furniture like dining tables and chairs, emphasizing the wood’s grain patterns helps create a strong visual appeal. That being said, that natural grain may need a little help to shine through in a visible way.
Because wood is not uniformly porous, other regions of the same piece of wood will receive more stain than others, which helps highlight the natural grain. Even after spraying with a clear varnish or lacquer to protect against moisture damage, the natural grain will still show through.
Otherwise, if you don’t care much for the character the natural grain adds to your woodwork, you may use stronger stains to achieve a consistent, even color tone for your railings, mantles and stairs.

Of late, a new trend is to use lacquer instead of paint. Paint scratches easily and has a tendency to expand, crack, and absorb moisture. If yours is a busy household, it won’t be long before you are considering refinishing those railings, mantles and stairs again. Lacquer on the other hand:
- Produces a uniform, smart-looking finish as it can be sprayed on
- Is more flexible and, thus, won’t crack and absorb moisture easily
- Can be polished to maintain its high gloss finish
- Ensures a hard and durable finish

To get a durable finish and look for your renovated kitchen, lacquer is the best way to refinish your railings, mantles and stairs. Standard acrylic paint may give you a reasonably acceptable result, especially if your budget is limited.
